2027: Political parties face stricter scrutiny as INEC updates regulations

AI Summary

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it will revise its political party regulations to align with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026. In a statement by Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, INEC said the updates aim to improve party supervision, ensure legal compliance, reduce pre‑election court cases, and bolster public confidence in democracy. A technical workshop involving national commissioners, directors, legal experts, election administrators and other stakeholders will be convened to review the 2022 guidelines. The Westminster Foundation for Democracy and Nigerian legal and electoral experts will provide technical support for the process. The revisions are intended to be in place before the next general election cycle.
